He lectured on the following topics:
1. How to start up your own plastic surgery practice.
Dr. Kalaaji told about her own experiences after running her plastic surgery clinic for 16 years; about the start up and up to now. He read about how important it is to have ethical rules to look after the patient and not create a need.
Dr. Kalaaji also talked about the importance of having good follow-up of patients afterwards. Oslo Plastic Surgery always has control the day after surgery and then regular checks for a year after.
Oslo Plastic Surgery also has a one-year warranty on all operations so that if correction is necessary due to complications or an unsatisfactory result, this is done free of charge within the one-year warranty period, provided there is medical indication and a clear improvement potential.
Dr. Kalaaji reviewed Oslo Plastic Surgery’s own studies / research that examined the quality of life of patients who underwent surgery such as breast implant insertion, breast lift with and without implants, intimate surgery, nasal plastic surgery, correction of inverted nipples and breast augmentation with own fat.
Dr. Kalaaji urged other plastic surgeons to conduct their own research as this provides a better understanding of what patients feel after surgery.
The lecture was very well received and led to constructive discussions afterwards.
2. Butt enlargement with own fat (BBL)
Dr. Kalaaji reviewed the history of butt fat enlargement with his own fat (BBL) and addressed the internationally reported complications that have occurred following such interventions. Then special the serious complications that can occur if the procedure is not done properly. He talked about Oslo Plastic Surgery’s long experience with BBL.
Some develop asymmetrical shape and / or volume on the buttocks. It can be flat or disproportionate to the figure and it can be difficult to find clothes that fit or fit nicely. Others develop asymmetry on the sides and the seat which can be aesthetically or practically objectionable. If you have excess fat in nearby areas such as the waist, abdomen, or outside / inside of the thighs this may make it look more disproportionate to the butt It is therefore optimal to remove fat from nearby areas with unwanted fat and then put it in the buttocks (BBL).
The demand for butt enlargement with own fat or BBL as it is commonly called (Brazilian Butt Lift) has exploded in recent years. There has been much publicity in the media, has become more widely accepted and the technology has evolved.
It is important to explain to patients who have unrealistic expectations of a BBL and have a desire for a «balloon crunch» that this is almost impossible to achieve and that it is not risk free. Therefore, all patients must be carefully considered to see if they are good candidates for this type of surgery.
The goal is to achieve good fullness with nice symmetry to the rest of the body.
Dr. Kalaaji outlined the importance of a thorough patient safety assessment prior to any such intervention and his own experiences with all the interventions he has made regarding BBL, buttocks enlargement with his own fat.
Before you can go through a BBL you have to think carefully through which areas you want the fat to be extracted from. The fat can be retrieved from various places on the body and in consultation with the surgeon, the areas that are best suited to retrieve fat for the BBL surgery are determined.
Fat transplantation to the buttocks (BBL) can be perceived as a win-win situation by many as fat is also removed from unwanted places for insertion into the buttocks.
The amount of fat needed for the procedure depends on the desired and achievable volume in the buttocks. With a standard fat injection you get small scars of about 2 mm where the needles are inserted
The result of this type of surgical technique depends on the resorption of the injected fat, ie the extent to which the body itself absorbs the fat. Generally, the (fat) fat integrates well into the receiving area. You have to assume that your body absorbs up to 30-40% of the fat in the first few months, so you fill a little more than you need (over-correct) to compensate for this loss. There is also no guarantee that more than 40 will be absorbed by anyone.
Handling the fat is crucial for it to heal. There are several contradictory techniques for treating the fat that is removed, so that only pure fat is injected. The fat must be treated with care without any major damage to the fat cells. A centrifugation process in which a single machine separates the fat is considered to fulfill these requirements. But here is the last word not said. Oslo Plastic Surgery uses a low degree of centrifugation to separate the fat, but retains the intimate fat fluid that supplies the fat cells with, among other things, the natural growth factors and stem cells that we think provides an optimal result to BBL.
It is not uncommon for a new injection to be needed, and with a resorption of more than 40%, a new fat injection is offered within the warranty period; this assuming that there is sufficient fat for injection for any volume increase or in the event that asymmetry occurs. If the fatty tissue is not sucked away from the body, so that the volume is not satisfactory, this remains a natural and long-lasting result.
